Acne Treatment
Nearly
everyone deals with acne at some point in their
lives. Generally considered a teen issue, acne can
persist, or even begin to be a problem well into adulthood.
What causes acne? Sebaceous glands
in our skin produce an oil called Sebum. Sebum normally drains
through hair follicles. If a follicle gets blocked, the sebum
accumulates, and bacteria begins to grow. The
resulting inflammation is the body's attempt
to kill the bacteria. Treatment then,
should deal with both eliminating the blockage and killing the
bacteria, as well as preventing the blockage in the first
place.
The problem is that we don't fully understand
why follicles get blocked, so few treatments are preventative.
Congestion of the lymphatic system has been linked to some forms of
acne, as has hormonal imbalances. Hormonal treatments impact
more than just the acne, and should only be undertaken in
serious cases, and under the care of a physician. Relieving
congestion in the lymph system however is good for your health
in general.
Because acne is caused by the bacteria that
the blockage allows to grow, many treatments focus on killing the
bacteria. A topical (on the skin) anti-bacterial treatment is
fine, but oral anti-biotics can, and often do, kill the body's
friendly bacteria as well. Your body contains organisms that
are beneficial if they stay where they belong. Without the
body's friendly bacteria, these organisms can spread to areas of the
body where they can do harm.
Herbal treatments can be used alone or in
combination with over-the-counter and prescription
medications. We offer an Herbal Skin Wash, a Lavender Facial
Steam Treatment, a Lymph Cleansing Tea, and for those of you who are
on oral anti-biotics, a Biota Restoration Tea.
1 cup bulk tea makes approx. 45 cups of tea. All bulk teas come with
a free, reusable muslin tea bag.
